O dieselpunk é nosso

Em um dos posts mais visitados deste blog pode ser lido o seguinte: “Este termo, cunhado pelos game designers Lewis Pollak e Dan Ross para o RPGChildren of the Sun, indica uma civilização da era industrial com futurística tecnologia à base de petróleo”. O termo em questão que servia para batizar o gênero de um videogame de 2002 é o mesmo a batizar uma obra literária de 2011, que não apenas dá continuidade à bem sucedida saga nacional de especulação retrofuturista como é, até onde sei, a pioneira do mundo em sua categoria. Dieselpunk – Arquivos confidenciais de uma bela época é a segunda coletânea de uma anunciada trilogia de livros da editora Draco, sempre organizados pelo escritor carioca Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro, a trazer para ambientações lusobrasileiras os conceitos dessas diferentes formas de imaginar o mundo a partir da adoção de tecnologias revolucionárias. O primeiro deles foiVaporpunk – Relatos steampunk publicados sob as ordens de Sua Majestade, um legítimo exemplar da cultura steamer a que mais tem se desenvolvido no Brasil e no exterior; o terceiro vai se chamar Solarpunk e já teve suas regras para participação dos escritores divulgadas. Este novo livro é de fato uma contribuição e tanto, com seu ineditismo em compilar em um mesmo livro noveletas dentro daquele cenário que une a era industrial da primeira metade do século XX com as tais tecnologias futurísticas a base de combustíveis fósseis. Ponto para o Brasil, para a editora Draco e para os autores reunidos nestas 384 páginas.

Da mesma forma que na resenha que escrevi para o primeiro livro desta trilogia, acho que o melhor é começar os comentários pela capa, mais uma vez a cargo do dono da editora, Erick Santos Cardoso ou, como ele assina seus trabalhos gráficos, Ericksama. Ele conseguiu o feito de ao mesmo tempo manter uma coerência com a obra anterior e o de dar uma identidade toda própria e adequada à nova proposta. Desta forma, está mantida a ideia básica de uma espécie de tela na qual se visualiza uma paisagem típica dos mundos que encontraremos no interior do livro; tela esta emoldurada por vários elementos condizentes com a estética do gênero em questão. A parte da atualização surge logo de cara na alteração de tais elementos: saem as letras serifadas, as engrenagens e o cobre de Vaporpunk para em seu lugar entrar uma elegante fonte de linhas verticalmente alongadas, tudo em um cinza marmóreo e cheio de padrões geométricos. Já naquela tela, no lugar do Rio de Janeiro do século XIX, podemos ver os espigões de uma São Paulo da primeira metade do século seguinte, com aviões mais pesados que o ar voando sobre eles e disparando as luzes perscrutadoras de holofotes. A embalagem já evoca um clima que vai desde o de outro viedogame, este mais recente, Bioshock (a partir de 2006); o de um clássico do cinema daquele mesmo período histórico retratado ali, Metrópolis, de Fritz Lang; ou ainda de Batman, the animated series, de fins dos anos 80. Mais um ponto para editora.

Agora, de nada adiantariam propostas inovadoras e um formato adequado se o conteúdo não fosse trabalhado com o mesmo cuidado. Felizmente, como é próprio das obras organizadas por Lodi-Ribeiro, este é um motivo para um terceiro ponto, pois quase todos os trabalhos que fazem parte do livro são de alta qualidade. Isso já pode ser visto logo desde o início pela noveleta que abreDieselpunk, de autoria do jornalista Carlos Orsi, que também estava presente emVaporpunk. “Fúria do Escorpião Azul” parece ter sido que mais inspirou aquela cena paulistana da capa da antologia, descrita no parágrafo anterior. Historicamente alterada por uma revolução de moldes stalinistas, a São Paulo reinventada por esse paulista de Jundiaí tem aquele mesmo ar opressor, estranho e reconhecível que embala o livro. Da mesma maneira que os autores do mais velho dos gêneros punk, o cyber, viam com descrença um futuro inspirado pelas ideias políticas e econômicas ultraliberais de Ronald Reagan e Margareth Thatcher, este brasileiro dieselpunker volta sua crítica à burocracia das economias planificadas, à violência das ditaduras do proletariado e à corrupção da nomenklatura do partido único.

Assumidamente inspirado nas histórias que Novell Page escreveu para o herói pulp Spider, Orsi criou seu próprio vigilante mascarado que, utilizando muita tecnologia retrofuturista, rebela-se contra o sistema que tomou conta do país. O Escorpião Azul do título enfrenta os homens armados da DPE, a famigerada Diretoria Política do Estado, usando dardos envenenados, lentes de visão noturna, seu próprio dirigível negro. Tudo descrito na prosa de um dos melhores escritores da literatura especulativa nacional, que nesta sua noveleta (cujo cenário espero ver sendo explorado mais vezes no futuro) emprega uma narrativa bastante entrecortada, saltando e voltando no tempo sempre que a trama agitada pede. O único momento em que ele acelera demais é justamente no final, quando encerra todos os subplots muito rapidamente, quase atropelando o leitor com tantas informações nas últimas páginas. A revelação da identidade do protagonista, por exemplo, é tão pouco surpreendente que poderia ter sido dada logo de início sem prejuízo algum para o resultado final do texto.

O steampunk tem um subgênero erótico conhecido como steamypunk. O conto seguinte do livro, “Grande G”, do também paulista, e publicitário, Tibor Moricz poderia inaugurar algo semelhante dentro da estética dieselpunk (para ficar nos trocadilhos, talvez algo com “trocando o óleo” fosse adequado). Mas há bem pouco de dieselpunk no texto que trocou as possibilidades da especulação próprias da FC pelas alegóricas cidades rivais de Smoke City e Steam City, e por um motor que, de algum modo não explicado, alia as mecânicas tradicional e a quântica. Sim, Smoke City, Steam City, o autor foi o único a dispensar a proposta da obra de se utilizar de cenários nacionais para voltar a insistir em localidades com nomes assim, de tamanha obviedade, exatamente da mesma forma que fez em seu romance mais recente, também publicado pela Draco. Em O Peregrino já havia o trio Downtown, Middletown e Uptown emprestando a mesma consistência de isopor e papelão ao cenário que pode ser vista aqui. E quanto ao sexo, é tudo feito de maneira de tal sorte hiperbólica e ao mesmo tempo com tão pouca profundidade que não causa impacto algum, diferentemente de um romance anterior de Moricz, construído por contos compartilhando a mesma ambientação,Fome, lançado pela Tarja Editorial. Com personagens príapicos e ninfomaníacas, que não se inibem em conjugar o verbo foder mas fazem questão de usar palavras como vagina e ânus mesmo nos momentos de maior tensão, o resultado empata em termos de constrangimento com alguma pornochanchada. Estou exagerando? O que dizer do seguinte trecho de diálogo: “a vagabunda tinha uma vagina quente e apertada, tão apertada quanto o ânus de ambas”?

Se ao menos a linguagem empregada no texto fosse mais cuidadosa poderia ser perdoada a falta que fazem uma especulação consistente, um cenário interessante, personagens relevantes e uma trama menos previsível. Mas não é bem o caso, como já entrega aquela quadruplamente redundante frase da primeira página do conto (e a 57 do livro): “Pináculos gigantes se alongavam em direção ao céu”. Entre expressões clichês como o “olhar repleto de significado” da página 73 que volta como “olhares cheios de significado” na 83 (a última do conto), a esperança de que pelo menos a forma se sobreponha ao conteúdo acaba perdida de vez. Se fosse para usar uma expressão emprestada dos meios automobilísticos para descrever o resultado final da leitura seria “perda total”; ou, se for para citar a expressão que o próprio autor criou para criticar contos tão equivocados quanto este em seu blog, “triplo eca”. É uma pena que um escritor que começou de forma tão promissora em seu primeiro romance, Síndrome de Cérbero – apesar de um brutal erro de lógica interna já naquele trabalho de estreia – tenha se perdido em um caso aparente de autoparódia e de preguiça estilística como este.

Felizmente o nível volta a subir dali para frente e se mantém ao longo de todo o livro. Em particular com o texto seguinte que, se não é o maior em termos de páginas, é o recordista no tamanho do título com folga. “O dia em que Virgulino cortou o rabo da cobra sem fim com o chuço excomungado” é a contribuição do designer carioca Octavio Aragão para o livro, outro que também esteve presente na Vaporpunk. O Virgulino que aparece ali é ele mesmo, o cangaceiro Lampião, que nesta recriação não apenas aceita uma missão que lhe propuseram mesmo em nossa realidade – a de combater a Coluna Prestes em sua passagem pelo Nordeste, na década de 20 –, como ainda faz isso usando armamento inimaginavelmente avançado. Acontece que o mesmo arsenal, uma forma bastante radical de nanotecnologia, é oferecido aos revolucionários em marcha, o que por um lado serve para equilibrar a peleja, por outro pode trazer consequências drásticas àquele mundo alternativo. Os destaques ficam por conta da linguagem empregada na narrativa, emulando a fala nordestina com muita cor local, e na misteriosa origem dos artefatos extemporâneos que surgem na história. Sendo o autor natural do Rio de Janeiro e criador de um universo ficcional sobre viagens no tempo, a Intempol, fica a impressão de que há ali uma brincadeira particular dele com o personagem denominado Carioca.

No quarto texto da coletânea temos o Barão de Mauá, a serviço de Pedro, o Imperador do Brasil, usando tecnologia avançada financiada por sua fortuna para defender o país em uma guerra territorial com a Argentina. A sinopse de “Impávido Colosso”, do também publicitário e escritor paulista Hugo Vera, pode soar mais como um representante do punk a vapor do que como um movido a gasolina; e essa é mesmo a impressão que persiste até o final da noveleta. Como um carro que passa por uma lanternagem completa para aparentar ser de um modelo mais recente que sua estrutura interna realmente é, elementos mais apropriados ao imaginário steamer foram jogados literalmente duas gerações adiante, para os anos 40 do século XX, de forma a se adequarem ao período histórico e à temática do livro. Tanto o Barão de Mauá quanto o Imperador em questão são netos daqueles conhecidos da história real (no caso, o jovem Pedro III que aparece aqui é apenas o primeiro de uma sequência a surgir nesta coletânea). Apesar disso e de um elemento que pode deixar a narrativa datada dentro de pouco tempo – o nome escolhido para a agente paraguaia, aliada do império brasileiro na guerra contra os argentinos, que se trata de uma piada com a musa da última Copa do Mundo – a noveleta é muito boa, com seus autômatos portenhos e um gigante de metal saído da Mauá Indústria e Tecnologia (creio que a sigla possível desta empresa não seja mera obra do acaso). E isso é o que realmente interessa no fim das contas, como definiu o compilador no prefácio da obra: “na seleção das noveletas que compõem a Dieselpunk, levou-se em conta dois critérios principais: qualidade literária e de elementos típicos das temáticas steampunk e dieselpunk”.

E quem escreveu estas palavras, o organizador desta trilogia de antologias, ressurge como contista a seguir. Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro igualmente usa um ponto de divergência que também é mais próprio do steampunk em sua história alternativa “País da aviação”. O inventor americano Robert Fulton, pioneiro da navegação a vapor do final do século XVIII, ajuda o imperador Napoleão Bonaparte a reequipar a esquadra francesa de tal maneira que nem mesmo aRoyal Navy comandada pelo almirante Nelson resiste ao embate do aço contra a madeira. Porém, aquele é apenas o ponto de partida, e após uma elipse (com o tempo contado segundo o calendário revolucionário dos gauleses) um outro Napoleão, bisneto do original, recebe mais inventores americanos na alvorada de um novo século para garantir a hegemonia agora dos céus. Em tempo: Napoleão deixou de ser apenas um nome próprio, e passou a ser empregado como um título honorífico, tal qual ocorrera com os Césares romanos. E da mesma forma, o Bonaparte do turno não é apenas o Imperador de um país, pois a era dos mandatários autocráticos ficou para trás, mas o responsável por uma estrutura administrativa internacional bem mais complexa em um dos melhores cenários já elaborados neste gênero no Brasil. Sem o recurso de elementos exteriores - como aquele vampiro da noveleta que ele publicou em Vaporpunk, por exemplo -, para os apreciadores mais puristas de HA esta nova noveleta de Lodi-Ribeiro, com suas divisões de tempo bem demarcadas, é um banquete, com entrada, prato principal e sobremesa. Se o romance Xochiquetzal – Uma princesa asteca entre os incas que ele lançou em 2009 inaugurando a editora mereceria ser traduzido para o espanhol, “País da aviação” deveria ser publicada em língua francesa sem demora, de preferência na forma de um novo romance ampliando os detalhes aqui delineados.

A sexta contribuição do livro, “Ao perdedor as baratas”, de autoria do jornalista paulista Antônio Luiz M.C. Costa, também é um cenário de história alternativa que já havia sido explorado anteriormente em outra coletânea, a Steampunk – Histórias de um passado extraordinário, da Tarja Editorial. Mas o conto de 2009 não foi a primeira incursão neste universo que o escritor chama de “Outros 500”: nove anos antes o cenário básico havia surgido em um ensaio para a revista onde ele trabalha, a CartaCapital, imaginando como seria o Brasil e o mundo caso Dom Sebastião não houvesse desaparecido no Marrocos em 1578, deixando para trás o trono português vago e uma crise dinástica que levou ao processo de decadência daquele reino. Um segundo conto na mesma ambientação foi publicado de forma on line e já recebeu comentários neste blog. Em Dieselpunk, por sua vez, vemos como seria o século XX daquele mundo em uma disputa eleitoral na república brasileira alternativa. Se em “A flor do estrume”, o texto de 2009, havia uma interação de diferentes personagens de Machado de Assis, nesta noveleta, apesar de o título ser uma paráfrase da expressão machadiana “ao vencedor, as batatas”, as criaturas literárias são de outros autores, entre eles, mais notadamente Clarice Lispector e Franz Kafka, convivendo com algumas personalidades históricas.

“Ao perdedor, as baratas” é quase uma visão em negativo do texto de Carlos Orsi que abre a coletânea. O que era visto com ceticismo pelo primeiro, um governo de moldes comunistas no Brasil, é apresentado mais do que de forma utópica, praticamente com caráter publicitário aqui. Com personagens discursando a cada oportunidade sobre as vantagens de tal regime; cenas como a do garoto pobre que recusa uma gorjeta e mais tarde se forma um profissional médico; ou ainda na nomenclatura de órgãos como os conselhos de Solidariedade Mútua, de Ajuda Econômica Mútua, de Amizade e Segurança Comum e de Cooperação Científica e Cultural, o texto chega em alguns pontos bem perto de se igualar à utopia de João Ventura que fechou Vaporpunk. E isso não é um elogio. Além disso, este texto também parece um reflexo invertido em relação a do de seu colega jornalista em outro ponto. Se Orsi acelerou demais perto do fim, Costa ao contrário alonga demais uma situação ao final, quando a trama em si já estava encerrada, de um modo bastante angustiante para o leitor. Parece que o autor não quis deixar passar a oportunidade de fazer uma última interação literária e usa espaço demais nisso, explicando excessivamente o que deveria ser apenas um detalhe. Espaço que poderia ser empregado em mais tecnologias de caráter retrofuturista, por exemplo, que tiveram pouca participação na história.

Explicar demais não é um problema da noveleta seguinte, “Auto do extermínio”, de Cirilo Lemos, professor de história do Rio de Janeiro que, aos 29 anos, é o mais jovem dos escritores reunidos neste livro. Aqui também há um conflito envolvendo a transição do poder no Brasil, mas não uma eleição, pois voltamos a ver um país monárquico nestas páginas. Mais do que isso, é o segundo D. Pedo III da coletânea, desta vez um monarca muito idoso e que pode morrer antes de deixar um herdeiro oficial para usar sua coroa. Novamente, forças externas (e internas) intervêm nos acontecimentos para tentar influenciar o rumo de um Império no qual grupos integralistas e comunistas ameaçam tomar o poder. Manipulado pelos acontecimentos, um homem que divide seu tempo tentando criar o filho e agindo como um matador profissional, se envolve num atentado político que tumultua ainda mais a situação. Para deixar as coisas ainda mais interessantes, tanto ele quanto seu garoto são assombrados por estranhas visões: o adulto pelas de uma santa, o jovem por um super-herói de revistas pulp, o que empresta um ar de fantasia urbana misturada com elementos de alta tecnologia. Sem dúvida, o texto com a pegada mais exótica da coleção.

A penúltima noveleta é a terceira a contar com um D. Pedro III em todo o livro, dando conta de como histórias sobre impérios brasileiros alternativos fazem mesmo parte do imaginário de nossos escritores. “Cobra de Fogo”, do editor gráfico de São Paulo Sid Castro, é a história mais empolgante e divertida do livro e a que melhor emprega as possibilidades do gênero quando se pensa no básico do dieselpunk: enormes veículos movidos a óleo diesel em um mundo vagamente semelhante ao do início do século XX. O autor oferece exatamente isso, uma corrida maluca entre gigantescas locomotivas que correm fora de trilhos, por terra, céu e mar, se preciso for. Na disputa, que ocorre em torno do globo, a posse territorial da Amazônia. Tal corrida é a forma que a Liga das Nações encontrou para decidir conflitos entre as diversas potências de uma realidade em que a posse de artefatos nucleares levou a um impasse conhecido como Pax Atomica. Neste mundo, o “Grande Crack de 29” não foi apenas uma crise econômica, como no nosso, ele dá nome ao início de um ataque que começou por Manhattam e no qual Hiroshima, numa ironia cruel, foi a última das cidades bombardeadas com aquele tipo de armamento.

Sid Castro criou uma história que é bastante leve, mas sem descuidar em nenhum momento na motivação dos personagens e na dos países e impérios que eles representam. Por trás de cada um dos pilotos incríveis e de suas máquinas extraordinárias – às vezes até mesmo na ambientação e nos intertítulos engraçadinhos –, um festival de referências, quase sempre cinematográficas, aguarda os leitores. Vamos unir agora dois fatos. Primeiro: na lista de antigas atividades do autor publicada ao final do livro estão incluídas as de ex-chargista e de ex-quadrinista (ele produziu roteiros e desenhos para revistas nacionais como Calafrio e Mestres do Terror); e segundo: a Draco vai estrear brevemente um selo dedicado às HQs com um álbum do citado Octavio Aragão e sua Intempol. Fica aqui uma sugestão, pois seria ótimo ver as locomotivas M’Boitatá, do Império do Brazil, General Lee, do Estados Confederados da América, Potenkim, da União Soviética, Yamato, do Japão, e todas as outras em uma graphic novel com o selo do dragão na capa.

Para encerrar a antologia, a presença internacional que também fez parte deVaporpunk (e não apenas parte, pois foi o autor da melhor peça daquele primeiro livro). Jorge Candeias é um tradutor português que se tornou recentemente best seller no Brasil com suas versões para os livros da série de fantasia Game of Thrones. Nesta nova oportunidade, ele retoma o universo da noveleta anterior, “Unidade em chamas”, no qual as invenções aladas do padre brasileiro Bartolomeu de Gusmão foram adotadas em Portugal revolucionando a maneira daquele país guerrear contra seus adversários. Em “Só a morte te resgata” as passarolas não apenas estão mais evoluídas com o passar dos anos decorridos entre uma história e outra; agora elas são acompanhadas de veículos aéreos mais rápidos e mais ágeis, chamados de albatrozes. O protagonista agora é o piloto de um desses últimos - um brasileiro que, apesar da descendência lusitana, luta pelo lado inimigo, uma confederação de países como França e Alemanha. Jeferson é o nome do rapaz, não que ele deixe de usar outras identidades ao longo da trama, que faz a opção de combater o país de seus antepassados motivado basicamente por racismo.

É na mente de um personagem de tal sorte controverso que Candeias nos faz mergulhar ao longo de toda sua história. Desde os momentos iniciais, quando Jeferson aparece em suas missões de voo, até a longa jornada de retorno ao Brasil, feita de maneira clandestina, envolvendo situações típicas de contos de espionagem, logo após ele receber uma misteriosa correspondência capaz de obrigá-lo a refazer todos os seus planos. Escrita de forma esmerada, com cuidado especial para os aspectos emocionais porém sem cair nas armadilhas da pieguice, a noveleta é um dos pontos altos do livro, deixando quem acompanhou esta e a história anterior ansioso por saber ainda mais deste mundo de Candeias. Numa nota à margem, não posso deixar de comentar o quanto o fato de ver pela primeira vez minha Florianópolis natal – aqui ainda chamada pelo nome antigo de Nossa Senhora do Desterro – em uma obra retrofuturista, e isto se dar pelas mãos de um autor estrangeiro, me faz pensar no quanto tem sido de fato enriquecedora a experiência que a cultura steamer tem alcançado em terras lusófonas nos últimos anos. Que tal experiência não pare por aqui e continue dando um resultado tão bom quanto este.

Revisitando mais uma vez a minha resenha de Vaporpunk, afirmei algo na ocasião que se era verdade para aquele livro, passa a ser para este. Eu disse que o primeiro, com seus oito textos, já havia sido a coletânea nacional – ou binacional, no caso – mais equilibrada que tivera a chance de ler. Pois eis que Dieselpunk – Arquivos confidenciais de uma bela época a supera neste quesito: a qualidade geral das nove narrativas reunidas neste segundo momento é ainda mais elevada e mais bem dosada. Mais não fosse, o pior conto daquela primeira antologia era bem maior, nesta, é o menor de todos, e os demais estão, na média, ainda melhores que seus antecessores. Um outro ponto a se acrescentar naquele placar. O sucesso das duas empreitadas aumenta a expectativa em relação a Solarpunk, o livro a sair em meados de 2012 e que encerrará este ciclo, desde a curiosidade em relação à cidade que estampará a capa – Manaus? Brasília? Lisboa? – até a qualidade e a imaginação das noveletas que deverão traduzir para nosso contexto o greenpunk.

With three copies each of 20 unique cards (half of which are devoted to the Dark Elves and their unending hatred), City of Winter is an invaluable Battle Pack for players looking to wreak vengeance upon their foes.

The design team for Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game offers additional insight into City of Winter:
The Dark Elves love to disrupt their opponents’ plans. They discard cards, steal resources, drop unit hit points, and even take control of their opponents’ cards. You never know quite what to expect next when facing these fearsome raiders.
In City of Winter the Dark Elves get a new hero, Egathrond (City of Winter, 88). While other Dark Elf strategies also get a boost in this pack, Egathrond gives the Dark Elves the ability to deal a killing blow to your opponent and finish the game. While his stats are not terribly impressive, his ability to smash through pesky new Fortifications, such as Wall of Maggots (The Inevitable City, 12), and destroy developments can be devastating. The latter ability, in particular, can force an opponent to keep developing zones, knowing that even the declaration of an attack could lead to a burned zone.
The battle rages on all sides
As the Dark Elves amass their power behind the towering walls of Naggarond, the other factions will have to consider how to make best use of the new warriors, tactics, and fortifications available to reinforce their sides.
Look for the Dark Elves to rally for battle behind Egathrond when City of Winter arrives in the Fourth Quarter of 2011.

Welcome to another spotlight on Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game! Back in May, we announced the upcoming release of The Inevitable City, the first Battle Pack in The Capital Cycle. Whereas past expansion cycles have striven to balance their inclusion of cards for all six factions, The Capital Cycle takes a bit of a departure from that goal. Each of its six Battle Packs focuses primarily on one faction, devoting nearly half of its sixty cards to those forces. The first pack, The Inevitable City, is centered on Chaos.
A mark of dark favour
We’ve already seen some of what The Inevitable City will bring to players of Chaos; In May, Warhammer: Invasion developer Lukas Litzsinger offered this brief overview:
[The Inevitable City introduces] an interesting twist on corruption. While the Skaven already use corruption as a cost for many abilities, Chaos takes this one step further. Since Chaos seeks to spread corruption across all of the civilised (and not so civilised) lands, it made sense for corruption to be a sign of favor from the Dark Gods, and provide benefits for corrupted Chaos units. With Khorvak Grimbreath (The Inevitable City, 6) in play, you may think twice about your target for Seduced by Darkness (Core Set, 99) or Daemonsword (The Warpstone Chronicles, 95).
Along with providing certain benefits to corrupted Chaos units, The Inevitable City goes even further still by incentivising the act of corrupting them. The Bleeding Wall (The Inevitable City, 11) is a two-cost Location that lets you turn your own corruption into a deadly weapon against your foes. With it, cards like Screamers of Tzeentch (The Inevitable City, 10) can become even more deadly. Warpstone Meteor (Core Set, 96) is also a dangerous complement to The Bleeding Wall, as it can provide half the resource tokens needed each turn, along with a target for the Wall unless your opponent damages his capital.

GenCon saw a surpise releases of the new epic set with boosters that were packaged by the DDM guild members themselves. The boosters (8/box, 7 cases total) were used in league all weekend, and a couple of them even ended up finding their way to tables during the community draft.

The set can be found here. This is, perhaps, not a 'true' Epic set in that almost all of the figures are useable in 200 point play. So, to alleviate this potential concern, perhaps we can consider this a 'semi-epic' set. What you will definitely find, however, are titanic creatures that can surely hold their own in whatever format you may wish to play them. Perhaps you think pieces in the 50-100 point range are simply not competitive enought to play? You may change your mind after looking at this crew. Figures like the Stealth Mage, who can almost become invisible at will and blast for incredible damage are clearly very frightening pieces; others, like the human fighter lord, seem somewhat innocuous but are incredibly solid when tested by the enemy.

We heard the same reviews again and again while we were at GenCon - "These are really fun pieces." We think so, too - and we hope you agree.

I proudly present you the Beta version of Original Edition (OE) Lords of Madness D&D Miniatures expansion set, but, first, let me introduce myself, my revision team and our “modus operandi”. This is the very first time I write here, so you can imagine I am a bit exited!

My name is Flavio Damasco and I am the lead designer of this project. Under the supervision of Peter Scott, I worked really hard with my team and the other friends of the OE project in order to create some balanced and fun miniatures. My team had already collaborated in other revised D&D Miniatures sets such as Player Handbook Heroes 1, Legenary Evils andDangerous Delves.

We worked this way: first of all we had every single existing stat card ordered by cost in a single huge stack and we studied each of them. With this background material we started creating the Lords of Madness profiles by comparing them to similar costed minis and/or similar class/race/type/ability creatures. But most of all, we took inspiration by the various 3.5 Manuals and Handbooks we collected (around 70-80 volumes) in which we looked for the “true version” of every mini of this set. This method granted quite an accurate result in creating balanced stats. We had a powerful brainstorming among us and we tried to create new and interesting profiles. I can say that this job took more than 60 hours of work for my group only.

After this step, we submitted our product to the other guys of the OE team and their evaluations. After some debates and modifications we all agreed on this beta version.

Summarizing, the main theme of this expansion is the attempt to create new pieces, while sometimes exhuming old and forgotten spells and abilities. For example you will find the “mount” rules are used again! On the other hand you will also discover some “spoilers” of future revised set (take a look at Yeenoghu!). We tried to bring past and future together in this set!

In conclusion: we hope you’ll have a great deal of fun! While we prepare the final version, please, discuss your point of view on the beta version of Lords of Madness stats with us and leave your feedback in the forums. And if you submit your feedback before september 30 2011, we'll take it into account while we make the final release, which is slated for mid-october.

2011 D&D Miniatures Constructed Championship Report

I for one never thought I would win the D&D Miniatures Championship this year. Sure, I’m a decent player, and I did spend a little time warband building and practicing, but this year was one I was just happy to actually be at GenCon, much less do well in the Championships, or more wild yet, win the Championship.

Before my tale and a recap of the matches, I have to hand out some well deserved kudos and thank you’s. First, HUGE kudos and thank you’s to Tried for putting together one of the best DDM GenCons in many many years. He said it was going to be one you would not want to miss and he delivered! Second, a huge thank you again to Tried for keeping this game we love so much alive and kicking. It definitely showed in how much work he put it with the number and quality of events, not to mention the Item Cards and the Rules update. Wow. Third, I would like to thank the Wizards of the Coast for their continued support of D&D Miniatures and the DDM Guild. The prizes for the GenCon and the Championship were AWSOME! And finally, and just as important, a HUGE thanks to all of the DDM Community! You are a very large part of why it is so fun to go to GenCon and play DDM. So thank you to everyone!

On to my tale

As some know from my posts I lost my job back in March. My main focus since then was finding a new job and going to GenCon was a very distant thought. It was not looking good as spring rolled into summer and I had only 5 interviews, but then in early July one of the companies I interviewed with said they would be making an offer. Yea and phew on many levels. With an offer of new employment on the way I booked my flight to GenCon.

Quest for a warband

Now knowing I was going to the show, I had about three weeks to come up with a warband and get a little practice with it. I knew this year’s meta was going to be wide open with potentially a huge variety of warbands. But I also knew that a lot of really talented DDM players were going to be at GenCon this year and these players always bring some of the most creative and challenging warbands. Finally, I was also certain that some particular figures / warbands would show up at the Championship. Specifically, I was anticipating seeing Eye of Shadow warbands, Dispater, Ambush Drakes, Wild PORC, Wand Experts, Skullcleave Warriors, and Gith Monks (gotta love the auto damage).

Some of my initial warband ideas were 1) Mind Flayer Lich + 2 Large Shadow Dragons + Umber Hulk + Filler; 2) Civilization PORC (ie Hobgoblin Marshal + Thrall + Wand Expert + Skullcleave Warrior, or other); and 3) x2 Cleric of Kord + Bladesinger + Oni + Tiefling Cleric + filler (I love Borderlands). Ultimately picking my warband was pretty simple – I wanted to play my favorite mini once more in the Championship, the Oni! But in which faction? My first pass was Borderlands and my old warband from a few GenCons back that used the Eternal Blade:

A perfect 8 figure 200 point warband. Wow, seemed like it was meant to be. I could not find a really good figure to use the Eternal Training items on, so I would skip them and use the EB’s Champ Powers for defense. The warband had four strong hitters and good area attacks versus Eye of Shadow warbands. After a few play test games, I still felt the warband was not optimal for an anticipated varied and open meta, the potential for “Blindness,” and especially so with the revised figures, rules, and the new magic items.

My next thought was to use a warband from a GenCon a few years back where I won the 200 point warm-up tournament. That warband used the Ogre Mage (another favorite of mine) with x1 Oni, x1 Skullcleave Warrior, x1 Wand Expert, plus x3 Merchant Guards and filler. I really really wanted to use as many Oni’s as possible, so I decided to go with x2 Oni’s with the Ogre Mage. I also liked the synergy between the Ogre Mage and Oni’s where its Champ Power turning allies invisible for the round would give the Oni’s Combat Advantage and additional Sneak Attack damage and be of benefit versus the Eye of Shadow. And if the Ogre Mage hits with his Sleep spell, it’s just “sauce for the goose.”

Next, what else would be a good fit in this warband? What would help the Oni’s? What else has Invisibility or Hide, as this looked to be very important for this year’s Championship? The answer, one of Tian-Zi’s favorite mins the Yuan-Ti Half Blood Sorcerer! Invisibility, good attack bonuses, good defenses, and a Line 10 attack that Dazes with ongoing damage. Perfect. I then had enough points left for 3 Merchant Guards and a 5 point VP grabber. My 5 point choices were between the Blue (5 points), Kobold Monk (5 points), and Goblin Runner (4 points and a 199 pt warband), or using a Loadstone attached to the Ogre Mage to get a 7 point figure (ie Infernal Armor). I tried a bunch of figures, but ultimately I decided to play the Kobold Monk based on its speed and high AC and DEF (better IMO for survivability). In retrospect the Blue or Goblin Runner would have been better choices, but the Kobold Monk just looks cool.

So here is my Championship warband:

I got in a number of vassal games with a friend and play tested late night with positioning on this year’s Championship maps. I felt good about my warbands speed, versatility, and staying power. Invisibility and Daze would really make the Oni’s that much more dangerous, the Yuan-Ti Half Blood Sorcerer is a beast on her own, and finally the Merchant Guards and Gaseous form would stretch the Oni’s hit points out over a game. And in play testing the warband did well versus the Eye of Shadow. Of course my lack of real face to face DDM play, I figured, would hurt my chances (I had only played a couple of real games since last year’s GenCon), but then again this is GenCon, it’s DDM, and all I need to do is follow Kevizoid’s #1 rule for DDM – Roll Well!

On to the matches

And for all of my opponents, the description of the matches is from my best recollection of the games and the notes I took. If there are some subtle difference from your recollections, feel free to add any notes to the article. Thanks.

Round 1 vs Joe Quiazon

on Broken Demongate, ASSAULT

WILD, Good, 9 Activations

First, it was great seeing Joe back at GenCon playing D&D Miniatures. Second, I played Joe and this same warband on Friday in the 200 point warm-up tournament and I knew this would be a tough matchup. The Elf Stalkers are brutal when buffed up from Storm, the Mercenary General, the Moon Elf Fighter, and Combat Advantage: +20 attack for 20 damage with the Deadeye Shot. So potential 40 damage each Elf Stalker with Twin Strike. Ouch. Round 1 Joe and I spent way too much time maneuvering into position in the center of the map. I guess it was mostly rust on both are parts, and myself not wanting to give the Elf Stalkers any easy targets. Round 2 I turned the Yuan-Ti Invisible, moved, and lined Storm, an Elf Stalker, and Mialee trying to hide around a corner. All 3 were hit. I moved up an Invisible Oni to attack the Merc General who had hit the Invisible Yuan-Ti. Then I used the Ogre Mages Sleep and hit Storm, Mialee, and the Elf Stalker. But again Joe and I were a little slow and at start of round 3 45 minutes had passed. Yikes. We received a warning from the judge for slow play. Round 3 I moved the other Oni to a Sacred Circle and Cold Coned Storm, Elf Stalker, and Mialee. The Oni missed Storm for the kill, but took out the other two. Then in this round the Merc General was damaged and also hit by the Yuan-Ti Venom Bolt. The other Oni killed Storm (who had made the save for Helpless and Dazed). The Moon Elf Fighter was completely missed again this round. In the 3rd and 4th rounds I used the Bodyguards and Gaseous Form to minimize the damage from the Elf Stalkers, an Oni hit a flanked Merc General, and with 15 ongoing damage the Merc General would die in round 5. Then in Round 5 I scored 10 VP’s and the General dies. All told 3 Merchant Guards and the Kobold Monk were killed by my opponent. The final score was 132-29 after 5 rounds. Record 1-0.

on Caves of Chaos, BOUNTY

I was so happy to see Pat back at GenCon the day before, now across the table from me, not so much. Just kidding. Pat is one of the best players in the world, always fun to play against, a very tough opponent to play against, and all in all a great guy. I won initiative and took the forest side (I did not want to have to attack him in those nasty forest corners). Round 1 we both jockeyed for position – I moved my warband along to bottom of the map, making use of the forest, Pat moving some of his forces to lower forest VP area and the rest into the cave with the statue. Round 2 I went after a Wand Expert and the Rogue in the forest while Pat’s other Wand Experts quaffed their Potions of Blindsight to see my “invisible” figures. He then proceeded to pick off my Guards and then start damaging my Oni’s and Yuan-Ti. In rounds 3 and 4 I missed a Wand Expert 3 straight times with an Oni, the Yuan-Ti, and the Ogre Mage. The misses allowed the Wand Expert to deal out a lot of extra damage before I killed it in Round 5. During this time Pat kept his forces out of my Line and Cone ranges. Eventually I killed a 2nd Wand Expert and then charged the Runecarved Eidelon in the 6th round with the Oni and hit. Then in the 8th round I moved up my Yuan-Ti and if I hit with the Venom Bolt I have a chance to kill it with my remaining Oni and possibly pull out a win, but the Yuan-Ti misses. The Eidelon pulls out of attack range and it is game over after 8 rounds. The final score was 109-97. Record 1-1.

Round 3 vs Jeremy Rose

on Dwarven Outpost, HAND of FATE

A Sellsword Swarm. This would be a challenge, both from the hit points and the caliber of player sitting across from me. I won initiative and set up behind the fort. Round 1 my warband advance into the dwarven fort, whereas Jeremy advances across the open area around the central victory area. He did a great job spacing out the Sellswords so that I could not get more than 1 in my Orge Mage’s Sleep. Round 2 we engage. An Oni and the Yuan-Ti Half Blood Sorcerer go invisible and attack. My opponent retaliates and hits with a crit on my Oni, and likewise hits and makes the conceal 11 roll on the Yuan-Ti. But all the area attacks add up and 2 Sellswords are killed. Then the Ogre Mage sleeps two more Sellswords. Jeremy gets a Merchant Guard from bodyguardeing. Round 3 the Sellswords take out my Oni and I kill two more Sellswords as well as damage the Mercenary General. Also, Jeremy masterfully uses Alusaur’s “healing” powers to keep some of his Sellswords around longer than they should have been. Round 4 Jeremy kills another Merchant Guard and I go after Raistlin while both of us collect VP. Round 5 I kill Raistlin and the Mercenary General will die on activation, but Jeremy concedes after missing with attacks from Alusair. The final score was 158-84 (with the death of the Mercenary General) after 5 rounds. Record 2-1.

Round 4 vs Joel Barnabe (Kezghan)

on Frostfell Rift, HAND of FATE

Oh boy, I just climbed back into it with a win to get to 2-1, now I have to face Joel and his Dispater warband, and on Frostfell Rift. This is one warband (or a similar version of one) that I practiced against. The key is to get to Dispater as fast as possible. I win initiative and set up on side A. Joel sets up and were off to the races (to get to Dispater before he wears out my warband). I move up the top side of the map using the “L” shaped wall to hide behind while picking up VP. Joel hits my warband with 5 fire and puts down fire squares in addition to hiding his figures well from my Orge Mage. Round 2 I let Joel activate his figures and he kills off x2 Merchant Guards. I run an Oni around the bottom side of the map to hopefully catch Dispater in a flank. I move up the Yuan-Ti and line a Duergar Guard bodyguarding Dispater. Round 3 another Merchant Guard dies. My Ogre Mage has a nice shot on Duergar Cleric, Witchknife, and Duergar Guard, or I can Get Dispater. I go for the 3 figures, and the Duergar Guard bodyguards the Witchknife. I hit both with sleep, but both make their saves next round. Round 3 both my Oni’s and Yuan-Ti miss Dispater. Joel’s Witchknife and Dispater then kill the Yuan-Ti at end of round. Round 4 I manage to kill off both Duergar Guards, but I manage to miss Duergar Cleric and Dispaer again. Kobold Monk and tile grabbing go up in flames. Round’s 5 and 6 my Oni’s and Ogre Mage are basically pinned down by Dispater, Duergar Cleric, and Witchknife and taking a lot of fire damage. Dispater has been damaged, but I have no way to kill him or the undamaged Duergar Cleric. And an Oni dies as time expires. Too many misses, letting the Yuan-Ti get too easily killed, and a well played game by Joel spelled my demise this game. I would now have to win out and hope for good tie-breakers to have any chance at winning the Championship. The final score was 58-128 after 6 rounds. Record 2-2.

Round 5 vs Michael Johnson

on Jungle Temple, BOUNTY

Well, not a matchup I wanted to see after facing Joel – two Ambush Drakes. I lose initiative and Michael sets up in the hidden side. Round 1 my opponent hides his Drakes and Large Deep Dragon from any long range attacks. I spread out and bodyguard my Oni’s and Yuan-Ti while grabbing VP and killing a Kobold Miner. Round 2 changes this game. Large Deep Dragon with Blindsight comes after my Yuan-Ti, who returns the favor and dazes the Large Deep Dragon and an Ambush Drake. Michael then sets up the Ambush Drake and Large Deep Dragon where my Ogre Mage can get his Sleep attack off on both – and he hits both rolling 18 for each. The Oni’s then proceed to kill the Large Deep Dragon. Round 3 the Ambush Drake fails it save it is then quickly killed. The other Ambush Drake uses its Ambush Strike on the Yuan-Ti Half Blood Sorcerer and rolls a crit. A quick 51 points, but game is out of reach as I need one more round of VP to hit 202. Michael concedes. The final score was 192-100 after 3 rounds. Record 3-2.

A quick check and Pat is continuing to win while Joel drops a close one. Good for my tie-breakers and chances to make top 4. One more win and I might make it in.

The moving lightning cloud. This was a fantastic idea by Brad. He took the octawhips I ran the day before in the 200 point warm up tournament and dropped a Kuo-Toa Whip for the Windsoul Genasai Paladin and some Loadstones. Simply brilliant versus all the range of sight warbands. Brad wins initiative and sets up in the Statue Room (start area A). I set up and its game on. My initial thought was to try and take out the Paladin, so in Round 1 I move as fast and far as I could while at the same time spreading out so that a line could not hit too many targets. Brad sends 3 Whips around the backside of the room, while moving the cloud and rest of the Whips towards my warband and the stairs. Round 2 we engage in the corridor just below the stairs. He kills my Kobold Monk and some Merchant Guards that are bodyguarding, while I damage some Whips (and miss the Pally). Round 3 my Ogre Mage moves up into position for a shot that can “Sleep” 3 Whips. He hits all 3. I loose another Merchant Guard and use Gaseous Form to minimize damage. In this round I kill 3 Whips, and finally start damaging the Pally. In Round 4 Brads Whips start faltering with some key misses, while I manage to kill another Whip and the Paladin. I kill one more Whip in Round 5 and overall my 4 main figures are in ok shape. Time ends the game with the final score 153-39 after 5 rounds. Record 4-2.

Top 4. Or not?

I have a chance. What did Joel and Pat do? I find out Pat won to go 6-0, while Joel wins his last round game to end at 4-2. But the opponent who beat Joel loses his match (this may hurt his tiebreakers). We now wait for Tried to announce Top 8. Tried announces positions from 8th to 5th and I was not among them! So I’m in the Top 4! The final list is 4th – me (Sirohk), 3rd – Joel Broveleit (demetri0s), 2nd – Mark Liberman (markdragon), 1st – Pat Lynch (6-0, undefeated). So it will be me facing Pat (again) and Joel versus Mark (again).

Thinking it will be tomorrow, Tried announces we will play the first round of the finals tonight, right now. Wow. We also find out that the final two rounds of the Championship will be played on a new map – the Twined Dwarven Halls map. And, we will be playing the short way from side to side (in the back of my mind I am thinking this is good for me as I can get to Pat’s Wand Experts more quickly). We get a few minutes to look the map over and its initiative roll for set up.

CIVILIZATION, Neutral, 8 Activations

I win initiative and make Pat set up first. He puts 2 Wand experts and Runecarved Eidelon in 1 room and 2 other Wand Experts on the other side of the map in a room. I set up on side with Runecarved and 2 Wand Experts. I know I have to kill the Eidelon to have a chance at winning.

Round 1. I move what I can to keep things hidden from the Wand Experts. In particular I move the Yuan-Ti and Kobold Monk to hide in the alcove so that the Wand Experts cannot get shots on them. I then make a huge blunder that eventually actually works in my favor – I leave my Ogre Mage exposed to 2 Wand Experts. Pat sees this and jumps on it to kill my Champion, but his two Wand experts are now bunched up together. I move an Oni in for a Cone on the Wand Experts and they both Fey Jump. Pat and I score VP.

Round 2. Pat goes first and moves a Goblin Runner. I then use my Kobold Monk to hold the secret door open for my Yuan-Ti to Venom Bolt line a Wand Expert, the Changing Rogue, and the Eidelon. All 3 are hit, Dazed, and taking 15 ongoing damage, while the Kobold Monk dies. I kill a Wand Expert, loose another Merchant Guard, and the Eidelon fails it’s save. My other Oni runs into the room and hit’s the Eidelon for 30 damage – it will die on activation next round. Pat scores VP in the round.

Round 3. I make the best use of Gaseous Form to minimize damage and Pat’s Wand Experts start missing without the Eidelon boost. I kill a second Wand Expert while loosing my last Merchant Guard. Finally then the Eidelon activates and dies. Pat scores VP. I am ahead on points 134-113 with both Oni’s (at 45 and 50 hit points) and the Yaun-Ti (at 65 hit points) versus Pat and his x2 Wand Experts and Goblin Runner. I can’t run at him, he’d gun me down. So I do the next best thing – I move my Oni’s into the rooms behind the secret doors and hide, while using my Yuan-Ti (and an Oni) to grab VP’s. If he comes at my Oni’s I can kill a Wand Expert fairly easily.

Rounds 4, 5, and 6. I win all 3 initiatives and either move out of VP area or force Pat to go first so that I have the last move into the VP area. He gets a couple of Wand Expert shots and we trade 3 rounds of VP. Games ends at end of round 6. The final score was 168-143 for the win after 6 rounds. Record 5-2.

Another incredible game with Pat. And I still cannot believe I won. I’m playing in the Championship game on Sunday. Crazy!

My opponent in the Championship game I find out is Joel Broveleit (demetri0s), last year’s 2010 D&D Miniatures Constructed Champion. He extracted revenge on Mark and beat him in the semifinal match. It now falls to me to stop Joel and his Eye of Shadow warband from becoming the first repeat Champion.

UNDERDARK, Evil, 8 Activations

Looking over Joel’s warband the night before I knew its weakness – low hit points on the Seer, Flayer, and Mangler. I knew if I basically ignored the Eye of Shadow and went after the other 3, then my changes for winning were good. That was the plan, but now how do I put it into action.

We sit down to set up and find out in addition to playing on the new map – the Twinned Dwarven Halls, we will be playing the long way on the map. Sweet. This helps me out as the Shadow Flayer of Eye of Shadow can no longer jump the length of the map with the Seer.

Also, I am very calm at the start of this game. No hands shaking, not nervous. Heck, I did not expect to get this far, so I figured I would play this game and have some fun, win or lose.

Round 1. I win initiative and make Joel set up first. I notice he’s leaves his Mangler within Venom Bolt range of set up from my Yuan-Ti. I decide to go for it and set up to do so. Away we go. We move fodder and I keep my Ogre Mage behind the secret door. I then make my move with the Yaun-Ti (invisible from the Ogre Mage) and hit the Mangler, who later in the round moves and fails it’s save. I set up an Oni to kill the Mangler next round if I get the opportunity. Also in the round Joel kills the Kobold Monk and a Merchant Guard on the Yuan-Ti. He then stuns the Yuan-Ti with the Shadow Flayer at end of round. I score VP.

Round 2. I unstun the Yuan-Ti and turn her Invisible. Joel kills some Merchant Guards who are bobyguarding and then Blinds and Dazes an Oni. I take the move and kill the Mangler with my other Oni. Joel while setting things up leaves his Seer and Shadow Flayer in a position where I can “Sleep” both of them. I hit the Seer and miss the Shadow Flayer. We both VP.

Round 3. Yuan–Ti lines Shadow Flayer and Seer, hitting the Flayer and missing the Seer. That miss hurt. I then use the Ogre mage to auto hit the Seer and do 30 damage. Seer then saves for Sleep. I now have to use my Gaseous Oni to run up and hit a flanked Seer for 30 damage (See is now at 5 HP). And finally I use my other Dazed Oni to Line the Eye of Shadow and the Seer. Hits the Seer for the kill. Phew, some breathing room on points. Joel and I both score VP.

Round 4. I win initiative. I had to think long and hard on this one. Score is at 113-49. Game is far from over, as my Yuan-Ti is at 45 hit points and could be killed by the Eye of Shadow in 1 round of attacks. Plus my Oni’s are damaged (45 and 50 hit points). Ultimately I was worried too much about the Yuan-Ti dying and Joel later told me he would not have attacked it if he went first. I decided to go first and use my Yuan-Ti. I was going to shift but said move, so Joel got an attack of opportunity from the Shadow Flayer, but misses. I had the Yuan-Ti attack the Shadow Flayer and rolled a “20”! Bang, Shadow Flayer is dead. Game changer! This was HUGE as if I had not rolled a crit, the Shadow Flayer gets Shadow Cloak and Mind Blast attack back again. Joel said if this had happened he thought he would be in a great position to win, and I agree. The Ogre Mage then uses Cone of Cold and kills a Blue and the damaged Lolth’s Sting. At this point the score was 165-49. We then both score VP.

Round 5. I win initiative. We both take turns and Joel tries to come up with a way to win, and he actually rolls a “20” from a Blue on my Ogre Mage for the kill. But it is not enough to pull out the victory. The final score is 185-103 for the win after 5 rounds. Record 6-2. I am the new D&D Miniatures Constructed World Champion. Unbelievable.

Some last thoughts

First, all I can say is thank you to the entire DDM community. It is an honor and a privilege to be your 2011 DDM Constructed Champion. Second, never give up in a tournament, you never know when opportunity will cross with being prepared, good things can happen. I kept playing and made it to the top 4, and then used the opportunity to win the World DDM Championship. Finally, winning this year was definitely a combination of skill, luck, being prepared (knowing your warband), getting good matchups, and rolling well.
